Together, Red Hat and AWS provide the solutions to quickly create, deploy, and manage traditional & container based applications consistently across the hybrid cloud. To offer more choice and flexibility for our customers, Red Hat and AWS have collaborated to offer Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA), a fully managed and jointly supported offering, available via the AWS console. ROSA enables organizations to take advantage of the power of OpenShift, the industry’s leading enterprise Kubernetes platform, as a native AWS service from the AWS Management Console. Today, we are excited to announce the general availability of the service.
Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS delivers enterprise-ready Kubernetes that many companies already use on-premises today, enhancing the ability to shift workloads to the cloud and making it even easier for customers to adopt containers and deploy their applications faster on AWS. ROSA allows organizations to focus on their core business and deliver value to their customers, without having to spend time and resources managing the underlying platform and infrastructure.
Some additional features & benefits of ROSA include:
- A Native AWS Experience: A Native AWS service accessed on-demand through the console.
- Fully Managed Platform: Installation, monitoring, management, maintenance, and upgrades are performed by Red Hat site reliability engineers (SRE) covering the complete stack including the control plane, worker nodes, and key services.
- AWS service integration: Take advantage of the many AWS cloud-native compute, database, analytics, machine learning, networking, mobile, and other services.
- Ensure applications operate consistently across hybrid environments: Delivering a consistent operator and developer experience whether you are running OpenShift on premises or on AWS. Take advantage of familiar OpenShift APIs & tools for ROSA deployments.
- Streamlined, integrated support & billing experience: Jointly operated & supported by Red Hat & AWS with an integrated support experience and 99.95% uptime SLA. Customers will also receive a single bill from AWS for both OpenShift & AWS consumption.
- Flexible consumption based pricing with no upfront costs: Customers can leverage hourly, pay-as-you-go or annual pricing for customers that are able to take advantage of up-front commitments.
- Maximum availability: Deploy clusters across multiple Availability Zones in supported Regions to maximize availability
- Regulatory compliance: Address comprehensive security and compliance needs with industry-specific standards and regulations such as SOC-1, SOC-2 Type 1 & 2 and ISO-27001.
Red Hat and AWS have been close partners since 2008 and with the development of the ROSA service we have seen this collaboration expand in scope as we work together to give our customers the best OpenShift experience possible on AWS.
Over the coming months ROSA customers will see a number of new features added to the platform that deepen the integration with AWS including:
- AWS Secure Token Service Integration: Allowing users to deploy ROSA using AWS STS to assign OpenShift components IAM roles.
- Private Link: Integration with AWS Private for cluster management traffic.
- Installation from AWS ECR: Allowing OpenShift to be installed and upgraded from AWS Elastic Container Registry.
- GPU Support: Enabling customers to leverage the wide range of AWS GPU enabled EC2 instances for AI/ML workloads.
- PCI DSS: Certification: Delivering PCI DSS certification for the entire stack including OpenShift control plane and worker nodes, reducing the work required for customers to deliver PCI DSS certified applications.
Other key features in development include cluster creation through the AWS Management console and deeper integration with AWS Identity and Access Management.
So how do you get started? Who do you need to call to try out ROSA? No one - as with other AWS Services you just consume the service and get charged for what you use - no upfront commitment is required, however if you want to reduce costs with an annual commitment then we have you covered.
Here are the steps to get started with Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS:
Step 1:
You will find Red Hat OpenShift on the AWS Management Console alongside the other Container services or you can directly access ROSA at the following url https://console.aws.amazon.com/rosa
Step 2: Once on the ROSA console page, as a one time step you will be required to enable OpenShift within your account. Simply click the ‘Enable OpenShift’ button.
Once enabled, you should see the green “service enabled” message at the top of the screen, and the ability to download the CLI as the next step.
